Joint par msn, Dani, jeune bassiste (20 ans) du non moins jeune et dynamique groupe de Pirate Metal écossais Alestorm, s'est très gentiment prêté pour nous au jeu des questions-réponses, pour nous permettre de mieux connaître son groupe, appréhender son premier album, "Captain's Morgan Revenge", une des bonnes surprises de ce début d'année 2008 !

- Gounouman : Peux-tu te présenter ainsi que ton groupe pour les fans français et lecteurs d’Heavylaw ?
Dani Evans : Salut, mon nom est Dani Evans, je suis le bassiste du groupe de Pirate Metal écossais Alestorm.
- Quand et comment avez-vous débuté ?
Alestorm était à la base un projet mené par Gavin Harper et Christopher Bowes, tous deux originaires de Perth, et qui voguaient à l'époque sous la bannière de Battleheart. Ce projet est né en 2004. Puis, Christopher et Gavin réalisèrent un EP éponyme en 2006. La popularité de celui-ci les encouragea à écrire de nouveaux titres pour un second EP “Terror on the high seas”, et à recruter de nouveaux membres pour pouvoir donner des concerts. C’est là que je fus engagé, ainsi que notre batteur à l’époque, Doug Sweirczeck.
- Ok ! Et pourquoi avez-vous choisi de changer de nom de groupe ?
Ah, le changement de nom fut un choix difficile… La bannière « Battleheart » était joyeuse, et nous l’aimions ! Néanmoins, garder ce nom aurait pu poser problème, dans la mesure où un groupe hollandais s'appelait déjà comme ça. Et même s’ils avaient changé de nom, pour éviter les confusions, nous jugions plus approprié de revenir avec un nouveau patronyme, et ainsi nous nous sommes décidés pour Alestorm.
- Avez-vous pu jouer live sous le nom de Battleheart ? Quelles furent les réactions de la presse et des fans à propos des deux EP’s ?
Oui, nous avons joué trois concerts locaux sous le nom de Battleheart, et ça a été excellent (« it was a storm » en version originale, histoire de faire un jeu de mot avec l’actuel nom du groupe, ndg). Les trois concerts étaient sold-out, nous avions des fans qui nous soutenaient… C’était une excellente expérience. Les deux leaders considéraient le premier EP comme une démo, et en riaient… Mais nous recevions beaucoup d'avis enthousiastes, alors nous avons commencé à travailler sur un deuxième EP, le premier sur lequel j'allais jouer. Il y eut une bonne couverture médiatique pour celui-là, à tel point qu’à peine six mois après avoir constitué notre line up au complet, nous figurions déjà sur un sampler de Metal Hammer (UK). Cela nous conduisit à donner de nombreuses interviews, il y eut beaucoup de chroniques online, ainsi que dans les magazines locaux… Tout cela nous permit de nous retrouver tels que nous sommes aujourd’hui !
- Et vous qualifiez donc votre musique de Pirate Metal ! Pourrais-tu nous donner la définition de ce nouveau style ? Que signifie-t-il pour toi ?
Le style musical « Pirate Metal » se caractérise par un mélange de Power Metal et d’influences folkloriques écossaises, en tout cas, c’est comme ça que ce genre est sensé sonner à la base ! Nous sommes très influencés par des groupes comme Running Wild, Ensiferum, Grave Digger etc, que nous ajoutons à notre propre touche culturelle, tout en tâchant de faire en sorte que cela se mélange naturellement sur le cd !
- Parlons un peu de votre nouvel album…Est-ce que son écriture était déjà achevée lorsque vous avez signé chez Napalm Records ?
Au début, nous avions commencé à travailler sur de nouveaux titres avec comme objectif la sortie d’un troisième EP. C’est alors que Napalm nous a contactés. Ce n’était pas alors un projet fini, même si nous avions des idées précises pour cette nouvelle sortie. Au final, certaines de ces idées se retrouvent sur ce nouvel opus.
- Dans la mesure où votre style est très visuel, allez-vous faire un clip pour promouvoir l’album ?
Certainement ! Même si je n’ai pas plus de détails à te donner pour l’instant, il y aura un clip pour une chanson extraite de l’album dans un futur proche. Nous n’avons pas encore décidé de quel titre il allait s’agir, donc je n’ai malheureusement rien de plus à te dire pour l’instant… Si ce n’est que cela se fera !
- Ok, je suis impatient de voir ça !

- A propos du thème des pirates : pourquoi avoir choisi de baser votre univers musical sur ce sujet ? Est-ce, historiquement parlant, un thème qui vous tient à cœur ?
Historiquement parlant, non. Tout du moins, ce n’est pas cela qui nous a influencés en premier. Cette idée nous est venue lorsque nous avons partagé nos souvenirs de voyages, nos quêtes personnelles. Chaque membre du groupe a beaucoup voyagé, forgé ses expériences, rencontré des gens différents. Quand nous étions à la recherche de thèmes de paroles pour nos chansons, nous nous sommes rendus compte que nous appréciions tous le thème des pirates, et nos proches aussi. Regarde les crédits pour la chanson « Of Treasure ». C'est un ami qui l'a écrite pour nous ! Je pense que ce sont tous ces éléments qui donnent à notre son un côté unique.
- Je trouve votre musique très proche de celle des finlandais de Turisas : les claviers, l’aspect épique, les refrains en forme d’hymnes, avec des chœurs… Es-tu d’accord avec ce point de vue ?
C’est vrai que nous suivons le même chemin qu’eux, et notre musique a les mêmes qualités que la leur. Certains anciens morceaux étaient directement influencés des démos du groupe et du premier album « Battle Metal ».
- As-tu un morceau préféré sur l’album d’Alestorm ? Dans le groupe, qui compose les morceaux ?
La chanson que je préfère écouter sur l’album est le titre éponyme, « Captain Morgans Revenge », j’adore la mélodie, aussi bien des couplets que du refrain. Cependant, en concert, rien n’est meilleur que « Wenches and mead ». Cette chanson est tout simplement « fun » à jouer sur scène!
Pour ce qui est de la composition, l’essentiel est écrit par Christopher (le chanteur, ndg), et passe ensuite entre les mains de Gavin, pour qu’il transforme ces idées en mélodies de guitares « plausibles », qui pourront se marier avec les claviers, etc… L’apport de Gavin dans l’écriture des titres reste très important, et notamment sur « Death before the mast », sa plus belle création. L’essentiel des éléments plus thrash naît de ses mains. Alors que tout ce qui est plus symphonique, ainsi que les textes, c’est le domaine de Christopher.
- A propos de l’Artwork de l’album... Qui l’a réalisé ? Est-ce que l’image d’un groupe est importante pour vous ?
L’artwork de “Captain Morgans Revenge” a été réalisé par Ingo Römling, du site www.monozelle.de. Et je pense que oui, l’image d'un groupe a beaucoup d’importance, tout du moins dans ce style de musique. Cela apporte vraiment quelque chose, notamment pour les fans. Cependant, le plus important reste bien évidemment la qualité de la musique. Si ta musique n’est pas bonne, ton image ne pourra pas t’aider bien longtemps.
- Quels sont vos projets pour l’avenir ?
Actuellement, nous préparons notre tournée en Angleterre qui aura lieu en mars avec Turisas. 4 festivals sont déjà confirmés pour plus tard également. Le Ragnarök en Allemagne le 28 mars, le Tomahawk le 30, le Northern Lights Festival en Autriche le 6 juin, et le Fiesta Pagana en Suisse le 7. Et d’autres festivals seront annoncés dans les prochaines semaines. (ndg : depuis l’interview, réalisée mi-janvier, le groupe a été confirmé pour bien d’autres festivals, et notamment le mythique Wacken Open Air)
- Les fans attendent aussi l’ouverture de votre site officiel ! Toujours en travaux ?
Actuellement oui, il s’agit d’un élément que nous avons toujours tendance à repousser au lendemain, et au final, rien n’avance… Mais maintenant, le travail a bien commencé, et nous espérons qu’il pourra ouvrir ses portes pour la tournée de Mars. Ou peu de temps après, sinon !
- Nous n’entendons pas beaucoup parler de Metal écossais. Existe-t-il une petite scène Metal là-bas ? Y a-t-il des groupes que tu aurais à cœur de nous recommander ?
Il n’y a pas beaucoup de Metal en provenance d’Ecosse, malheureusement, c’est tout à fait vrai. Peu de groupes parviennent à dépasser l'étape des concerts locaux… Il y a cependant deux groupes que j’apprécie beaucoup et que j’aimerais recommander : Sons of Slaughter, qui joue un Metal cru et violent dans le style des premiers opus de Nile, et Aces High, un groupe d’amis qui a effectué quelques concerts avec nous. Ils jouent un vieux rock efficace et bien énergique. L’essentiel de l’industrie musicale chez nous est dominée par les groupes indépendants et émo, et ça rend difficile aux vrais groupes de Metal de se forger un nom.
- Je sais que c’est vraiment tôt, mais avez-vous déjà des idées pour un prochain disque ?
Pour être honnête, nous n’avons pas fait de plans à propos d’un futur trop lointain. Nous nous concentrons surtout sur ce premier album, et la tournée qui l’accompagne. On verra sûrement ça d'ici quelques mois!
- Et bien, merci beaucoup pour cette interview ! Pour finir, as tu un dernier mot à adresser aux fans français et lecteurs d'Heavylaw ?
Simplement un grand merci à toi pour l'interview ! François : Can you introduce yourself and your band for the french fans and readers of Heavylaw ?
Dani : My name is Dani Evans, i am the bass player in Scottish Pirate Metal band Alestorm.
François : How and when did Alestorm started ?
Dani : Alestorm originally came about as a joint project between Gavin Harper and Christopher Bowes, both of Perth origin, under the banner Battleheart in 2004. Christopher and Gavin release an early self titled EP in 2006 and the popularity of it lead to writing of new material for the 'Terror on the High Seas' EP and the recruiting of live members, Myself and, the drummer at the time Doug Sweirczeck.
François : ok, great ! and why did you choose then to change the name of the band ?
Dani : The name change was a hard one. The banner of Battleheart was a joyus one and we loved it. We felt though, it may conflict with a Dutch band of the same name. Though they had removed themselves from the business we felt it appropriate to come up with the new name and hence we settled on Alestorm.
François : Have you ever played live under the name Battleheart ? what were the reactions of the press/fans about the two EP's ?
Dani : Yes, we played three local shows under Battleheart and they went down a storm, excuse the pun. All three sold out and packed to the rafters with fans. It was an awesome experience. The first EP started off as a demo and a bit of a laugh for the two main lads, then when people actually started to comment on it, it came to that, this might be something good. So the second EP arose. Alot of coverage was given to the second EP here and abroad, so much so we appeared on the CD for Metal Hammer in the UK after just 6 months after meeting as a full band. This lead to many interviews and reviews online and in, mainly local, magazines and lead to the current situation we find ourselves in today.
François : hey great ! So, you name your musical style "Pirate Metal" ! This is pretty new :) Could you give us your own definition of this name ? What does it exactly mean ?
Dani : The musical style 'Scottish Pirate Metal' can be charecterised as Power Metal with Scottish Folk influences, that's what he sound is based on at least. We take much influence from bands like Running Wild, Ensiferum, Grave Digger etc... then add our own cultural touch and make inot what you hear on the CD.
Then, let's start talking about the new album
Did all the material was already written when you signed the deal with Napalm ?
Dani : We had begun work on the album as we were intending on releasing a 3rd EP before we were approached by Napalm. Though it was by no means a finished product. We had ides of what we wanted to do with it. Some of which ended up on the final product.
you have your own style, a very "evocatice style" ! so, do you plan to make a video to promote "Captain Morgan's Revenge" ?
Dani : Certainly! While it's a little while off and there aren't details to give out at the moment, there will be a video from the album, sometime in the near-ish future.

François : Can you tell us for which song will it be, or do you prefer keeping the mystery, the secret ?
At the moment, there isn't any final decision on it, so giving out a name would be pointless,
François : Your style reminds me a lot the finnish band Turisas… Keyboards, epic style, hymns… :D Do
you agree with that ?
Dani : Indeed, we do follow in a similar footstep to Turisas and our music has the same qualities. Some of our earlier material was directly influenced by "The heart of Turisas" demo and Battle Metal.
This doesn't surprise me, actually ;)
Have you got any favourite track on the album ? who is the composer of the band, lyrics and music ?
My personal favourite song to listen to is Captain Morgans Revenge, i just love the melody through the chorus and verses. To play though, nothing beats Wenches and Mead. It's just such a fun song.
Most of the writing of lyrics and music is done by Christopher and passed down to Gavin to be made in to plausable guitar tracks from keyboard tracks and so forth. Gavin has a big hand in the writing of material aswell though, taking 'Death Before the Mast' as a crowing jewel. Alot of the thrashier stuff comes from his hand. With the larger symphonies being of Christophers devices.

About the Artwork of the album...Who made it ? is the "image" of a band important for you ?
The artwork for Captain Morgans Revenge was done by Ingo Römling of www.monozelle.de . The image does play a big part in this style of music at least. Gives more of a feel for it, something for the fans aswell. Though, it all comes back to the quality of the music. If that isn't there, an image won't save you for long.

so, what are your plans for the near future ? Promotion, tour..... ??
Currently we are preparing for our upcoming UK tour with Turisas beginning in March. We have 4 festivals confirmed for 2008 aswell, Ragnarök in Germany on the 29th of March, Tomahawk in Germany on the 30th of March, Northern Lights Festival in Austria on the 6th of June and Fiesta Pagana in Switzerland on the 7th of June. With more festivals to be announced in the coming weeks.
Have you chosen to talk about pirates and base your musical universe on their stories ? Are all the lyrics dealing with this theme ? Historically, is this important for you ? *
Historically speaking, no. It's not the basis of most of our influence at least. Alot of of music and writings come from our travels to other countries and from our friends as a whole. The band individually travel alot and we meet different people and have different quests. While the theme runs through pirate lore, we spend more time writing around activites or ideas we or a friend have had(see Of Treasures credits, a friend wrote the lyrics for it). I guess it's why we have such a different sound and feel around our music.
Fans are awaiting the opening of the official website…Still under construction ? ;p
At the moment yes, it's something we've kind of procrastinated on. Work has begun and we're hoping that it is up for the tour in March, if not soon after.

we don't hear luch about metal in scotland...is there a good Metal scene there ? Do you have bands that you would like to recommand ?
There isn't much from Scotland, yeah that's very true. Not very many metal bands make it out of the local scene sadly. I only have two personal favourite bands that i would recommend from Scotland, one being Sons of Slaughter, metal harkening back to the early days of Nile and such kin and Aces High, a friends band who played some of the earlier shows with us, proper old styled rock and a good bucnh of lads. Alot of the music business is now dominated with indie and emo kids so it makes it harder for proper metal acts to get establsihed around these areas now.
heum... yeah, that's disappoiting
I know it's a bit soon to ask this, but have you already got plans, ideas or wishes for a next release ;)?
We haven't put much thought into the future to be honest. We're just concentrating on the upcoming release and touring, Maybe in a few months time,
