En deux albums Bloodbound est devenu une valeur sûre du renouveau du speed métal old school. C'est un des deux fondateurs, Tomas Olssen, qui s'est prêté au jeux des questions réponses. Une interview répondu par un passionné de la musique qui ne cache pas ce qu'il pense...

Salut, peux-tu te présenter et nous dire quelques mots sur la création de Bloodbound?

Frederik Bergh, Urban Breed et moi-même avons formé Bloodbound durant l'été 2004. Nous avions déjà joué ensemble dans le temps des années 90. Nous avions déjà à l'époque la même vision sur la musique que nous voulions composer; une musique très mélodique, rapide et bien sur heavy. Nous avons donc décidé de démarrer Bloodbound et d'écrire le plus rapidement tous les titres qui nous passaient par la tête. C'était marrant de voir comme nos idées se complétaient.

Peux-tu nous parler de votre façon de composer, et comment faites-vous pour ne pas ressortir les mélodies déjà entendues 15 fois?

Avec Frederik, on a écrit toutes les chansons du nouvel album. Habituellement on sort une idée assez basique et on rajoute des trucs à droite et à gauche. Tu sais d'avance à quoi va ressembler le morceau, mais bien souvent ça sonne au final bien différent de ce que tu l'avais imaginé. Mais d'habitude on arrive à avoir ce que l'on veut :).
On a commencé l'écriture de Book Of The Dead l'été dernier (2006) et on a terminé à Noël. Les sessions en studio se sont déroulées en Janvier et Février. Mais j'avoue que nous avions déjà pas mal de trucs déjà composés lors de la session de l'enregistrement de Nosferatu mais que nous ne pouvions pas mettre sur ce dernier. Nous les avons alors utilisés pour Book Of The Dead.

Avec la multitude de sorties en speed mélodique, comment essais-tu d'être unique?

Nous essayons de composer des titres qui nous donnent du plaisir aussi bien à écouter qu'à jouer. Nous essayons de faire une musique unique mais la qualité de celle-ci est notre priorité.

Le but de Bloodbound serait-il de ressusciter et de dépoussiérer un speed métal vieux d'une vingtaine d'années? Si c'est le cas, vous le faites parfaitement!

Merci! :) En notre musique il faut plus y voir comme un tribute de tous les groupes avec qui on a grandi comme Maiden, Priest, Metallica, AC/DC, Accept, Helloween et nous essayons d'y ajouter notre nouveau et unique son.

Quelques mots au sujet du départ de Urban Breed, (est-ce d'ailleurs son vrai nom?)

Oui c'est bien son vrai nom, crois-le ou non :). Urban voulait se concentrer à 100% sur son album solo. Ce fût triste de le voir partir, mais ce projet solo était un truc qu'il voulait faire depuis bien longtemps... comment lui en vouloir? Il n'y a pas de rancunes, bien au contraire! Il va faire des shows avec nous cette année!

Deux chanteurs en 3 mois, record?:p Que s'est-il passé avec Kristian Andrén? Il semblerait que vous ne soyez pas très chanceux avec les ex chanteurs de Tad Morose!

Hahahaha, c'est vrai que c'est drôle! Kristian Andrén est un très bon ami mais il nous a seulement aidé sur un show car nous ne voulions pas annuler le show et laisser tomber les fans. En fait je pense qu'il y a eu des incompréhensions à ce sujet. Beaucoup de personnes semblaient croire que Kristian Andrén était un membre permanent, alors que non.

Comment vous-êtes vous décidés pour le nouveau chanteur?

Nous avons toujours adoré la voix de Michael Bormann et après avoir écouté plus sérieusement ses lignes mélodiques, nous avons réalisé qu'il était parfait pour nous. Nous voulions quelqu'un plus proche de Jorn Lande et Coverdale que d'un classique chanteur de power.
Nous l'avons donc appelé, proposé de travailler avec nous, et après quelques semaines il a accepté. Nous sommes vraiment satisfaits de son travail sur cet album.

Personnellement je trouve certaines parties vocales très mal adaptées au chant de Michael Bormann. Il semblerait que l'album ait été composé avant l'arrivée de Michael...

Tout à fait, toutes les chansons étaient composées avant l'arrivée de Michael et en effet il n' a pas l'habitude de chanter ce genre de musique, surtout si on le compare à Urban Breed...une question d'habitude :)

Comment s'est passée l'insertion de Michael au sein du groupe?

Il est très cool et de par ses qualités humaines et de chanteur, c'est un régal de travailler avec lui, “an a-level cat” (NDD: Pas compris) comme on dit dans le showbiz! Hahahaha (NDD: ça devait être drôle! :p)

Quand tu écoutes Book Of The Dead, à quoi penses-tu?

Sincèrement, parfois j'aime cet album, mais parfois je le trouve merdique, mais c'est un album très bien fait et on sent l'énorme travail derrière ce dernier. Mais il est clair que c'est un album dont nous serons toujours fiers, même après plusieurs années. Et j'espère que c'est un album qui ne vieillira pas avec le temps.

Quelle est ta meilleure chanson?

Je pense que Nosferatu est le meilleur titre que je n'ai jamais écrit et à mon avis il est également le meilleur titre de Bloodbound, et de loin! Quand j'avais fini l'édition des parties vocales, j'ai mis les choeurs en boucle et je me suis assis avec un grand sourire sur mon visage.
J'ai envoyé un SMS à Fredrik en disant: “On en tient un qui tue!” hahaha, cela peut sembler un peu cucul mais c'est bien la vérité! La  mélodie des deux guitares quand le titre accélère est personnellement ma préférée. Nous voulions quelque chose de spécial pour ce titre, alors nous avons rajouté une intro avec des éclairs, de la pluie et des cloches. Nous voulions retranscrire au mieux les ressentiments du personnage devant les portes de l'enfer.

...et ta pire?

Je ne pourrais pas te le dire...

Dis moi une chose positive de l'album...

Je pense que l'album dégage énormément d'ondes positives et on a envie que d'une seule chose: headbanguer et avoir du fun! Je pense également que c'est un album qui reflète parfaitement la direction musicale vers laquelle le groupe avance. Je suis content, beaucoup de gens l'aiment!:)

Et une chose à améliorer? Une erreur que tu ne referas pas au prochain album?

Je pense que nous nous dirigerons vers un son plus moderne pour notre prochain album. Nous nous préparerons plus longtemps à l'avance avant d'entrer en studio.

Pourquoi deux pochettes différentes pour l'Europe et le Japon? Cela ne leur suffit pas d'avoir un titre en plus?

Le label européen avait les droits sur la pochette européenne. Pour éviter tous problèmes financiers nous avons décidé d'en faire faire une autre.

Dernière question...vous êtes passés d'un style de black metalleux à un style plus néo métal... pourquoi ce changement? Une close dans le contrat de Michael Bormann? Ou tout simplement le maquillage irritait votre peau.

Hahaha. Je pense que beaucoup de gens ont été surpris que nous jouions du métal classique et non du black metal. Nous voulions faire quelque chose de différent avec notre image pour la sortie de Nosferatu. En fait il reflète le concept et l'histoire de l'album. Book of The Dead est bien différent et je ne pense pas que Michael aurait aimé ;)

Hi can you introduce yourself and tell us few word about the creation of bloodbound

Me, Fredrik Bergh and Urban Breed formed BLOODBOUND back in the summer of 2004. We had been playing in bands together on and off since the early nineties. We had the same vision and wanted to start a metal band with a focus on melodies and good song writing, but still heavy, fast and raw. We immediately started to write songs and found that we really complement each other when it comes to song writing.

Can you say few words about the writing session, how do you compose? Where did you find these melodies? And unseen melodies

Me and Fredrik has written the songs on “Book Of The Dead”. Usually there is a basic idea that we start out with and then we add different bits and pieces to it. You usually have a vision before you start, but sometimes you end up with something totally different than what you expected. But most of the time you work towards an already set up goal. We started with the song writing last summer and finished around Christmas, and went into the studio during January and February. We already had some good material that we couldn’t fit on the” Nosferatu” album that we used as well.

With the thousand of bands who release an album of speed melodic, how do you try to be unique?

For us music is about writing as good songs as possible and have fun while doing it, sometimes you end up sounding like something else sometimes you don’t. We try to make our sound unique but the quality of the song comes first.

The goal of Bloodbound is to resuscitate the old speed mélodic metal? If it is the case, it's done and perfectly!

Thanks :) It’s more of a tribute to the old classic bands that we grew up with, like Maiden, Priest, Metallica, AC/DC, Accept, Helloween etc... We try to add our unique and “new” sound to classic metal.

Few words about the departure of Urban Breed, is it his real name?:p

Yes, it’s his real name, believe it or not. Urban wanted to focus 100% on his solo album. It was sad to see him leave, but it is something he has wanted to do for a long time, we couldn’t blame him for that. There are no hard feelings, in fact he is doing some shows with us this summer.

Two singers in 3 months, it is a record? :p What did happen with Kristian Andrén, it seems you are not very lucky with ex singer of Tad Morose :p

Hahahaha, yes it’s kind of funny. Kristian Andrén is a good friend and actually only helped us out at one gig as we didn’t want to cancel the show and let the fans down. I think some people misunderstood the whole thing and thought he was a member of the band but that was not the case.

How did you process to search a new singer?

We always liked Michael Bormann’s voice and after listening more carefully we realized that with his pitch and power he could be the right guy for us. We wanted someone with a voice closer to Jorn Lande/Coverdale than the traditional “clean” power metal voice. We called him up and asked him if he wanted the job, and after a couple of weeks he decided to join us. We are very pleased with his outstanding performance on “BOOK OF THE DEAD”.

In my opinion some songs don't fit with the vocal part, some songs seems to be composed before the arriving of Michael Bormann , I'm in right? Or I'm totally in wrong, so how did (have you) you arrange songs after?

All the songs were composed before Michael joined the band, and it’s not his usual type of songs and singing. So I guess you could have a point if you compare it to his softer solo stuff and the fact that people are used to Urbans singing.

How did pass the insertion of Michael in the band?

He is very cool and easy to work with and a very professional and talented singer, an a-level cat as we say in the business ;) hahaha…

When you are listening to Book of The Dead, what do you think?

Sometimes I love it and sometimes I think it sucks, but it’s a very well made album and a lot of hard work went into it, so I think it will stand the test of time and hopefully we won’t be ashamed of it in the years to come.

Which song is your best one?

I think “Nosferatu” is the best song I’ve ever written and in my opinion it’s the best bloodbound song so far. When I finished editing the vocals for the chorus I just sat there with a smile on my face with the chorus on repeat. I sent a text message to Fredrik saying “We have a killer here…” hahaha, sounds very corny, but it’s the truth. The twin guitar melody when the gallop starts is a personal favourite. We wanted something extra special for this song, so we added an intro with thunder, rain and a gigantic church bell. We wanted to capture the feeling of a man standing at the gates of hell…

...and your worst one?

I couldn’t say…

Can you tell me one positive things of Book of The Dead?

I think the album has got a lot of positive energy and it makes you want to headbang and just have fun. I also think it’s a step in the right direction for the band. I’m glad so many people like it :)

And one to improve, a mistake you won't do for the next album?

I think we will go for a more modern sound on our next album and we will try to be better prepared before we go into the studio.

Why two covers for a japan release and an european release. It's not sufficient they have one more song, they need a new cover? :p

Our European record label had the rights for the European cover so we decided to use another cover for Brazil and Asia. It was a financial decision.

What can we except for the next album?

A more modern sound with more riff-based and heavier songs.

You passed from a black metal look to a neo look, why this changement? It was a condition of Michael Bormann? Or the make up irritate your skin?:)

Hahaha. I think a lot of people were surprised, we play classic metal and not Black Metal. We wanted to do something different with the image and underline the whole concept of the album “NOSFERATU”. The make-up is a part of the dark concept of the album “NOSFERATU” and is exclusive to that album and its story. On our new album we are not wearing the make-up as it wouldn’t feel right, the new album “BOOK OF THE DEAD” is a totally new entity. It had nothing to do with Michael even though I don’t think he would have liked it;)
