Merci beaucoup ! Le plaisir fut le mien.

Allez acheter notre album « Calling The Earth To Witness »…

----------------------------------------------------------ENGLISH VERSION----------------------------------------------------------

- Hello, could you introduce yourself and the band please?

Hi!
I´m Magnus Holmberg and I play the keyboards in the progressive metal band Darkwater.
The other members are: Henrik Båth (vocals & guitars), Karl Wassholm (bass), Tobias  Enbert (drums) & Markus Sigfridsson (lead guitars)

- You just formed the band in late 2003, and now you will release your first album. It is really quick, could you tell us more about the first days of Darkwater and how you get in touch with your record company?

Well, actually the idea of a progressive metal band was formed a couple of years earlier than that and we had already written some songs or at least had some ideas for some songs.
It was Henrik, Markus and myself who tested out some riffs and ideas in the beginning and after a while we wanted Tobias to play the drums because he had aolready played with us in the band Harmony. A suitable bass player was slightly harder to find, but sometime in 2003 the line-up was complete with Karl Wassholm handling the bass.
We found our Record Company 'Ulterium Records' on the Internet. We thought they had the best deal among the companies and so far we are very satisfied with the co-operation .

- We could feel that you are musically mature, so did you already play music in other bands before Darkwater?

Yes, I think all of us have played in different bands before we started Darkwater. For an example Henrik and myself played in a slightly similar band to Darkwater called Jam Factory.
Besides that, four of us played in, and still plays, in a band called Harmony, which is more towards the neo classical metal direction.

- How do you proceed to compose your songs?

Often it starts with an idea or a complete song from either one of us. If it´s accepted by the other band members it´s taken to the rehearsing room where we work on the arrangement, song melodies and such things. Most of the songs are written in this way but there are exceptions, which is the case with the song 'Habit' which was written completely in the rehearsing room with all the members involved in the writing.
The lyrics are almost always written after the music is done.

- Is there a concept for Calling The Earth To Witness? If no what the lyrics deal with?

There was no concept planned for the record as far as the lyrics goes, not intentionally anyway.
The lyrics on this album was written by Henrik, Markus and Karl. They wrote a couple of song lyrics each and when they were done we noticed that there was some kind of theme though that wasn´t the point.
The theme could be said is about different peoples inner thoughts or different mental stages in the human mind.

- Does the cover is linked to the songs? Who has made it?

Our lead guitarist Markus designed it with a little help from Henrik, the singer. Infact there should be hints from every song somewhere to be found on the cover and in the booklet. They can be quite hard to find though...

- You have the chance to work with Peter Seather and Goran Finnberg for the mixing and the mastering? So how was it? Was it an expensive production?

That was great! We are very happy with their work and effort!
For the mixing we had listened to different metal records and checked out who had worked with the production of them and finally we thought that Peter Seather was perfect for the mix job. Seather then recommended Göran Finnberg for the mastering and when we heard which bands he had worked with before we were more than happy to recieve his help with the album.
Actually it wasn´t all to expensive (at least if you compare with other bands) because of the rather quick post-production, much thanks to the efforts and know-how of Seather and Finnberg.

- There are many very good progressive Swedish bands. So is it not difficult to play on the same scene with some big bands like Pain Of Salvation, Evergrey, The Flower Kings or Mind’s Eye…?

Yes, there are infact many great progressive bands in Sweden, for example those you just mentioned. Hopefully we have a unique sound and strong material enough to match these great bands.
It´s always hard to predict the future with a debut band like our own, but if it takes blood, sweat and tears to make it to their level then that´s just what we will offer!

- How did you describe your music? What could you say to convince the French prog fans to buy your album?

Well... that´s a quite difficult question. It´s a mixture of several ingredients actually, as the case is with many prog bands.
The main trademark for Darkwater I think is the melodic touch and the harmonies. We try to summonise a blend of hard & heavy structures with melancholic and soft passages. And of course with a reasonable amount of instrumental parts ;)
I hope that´s enough to convince you clever & sophisticated prog fans of France to go out there and buy our album! ;)

- Do you think it contains a weak point or is there something you regret about this album?

No, actually we are very happy with the result, both the musical aspects and the production.
Of course there are always some tiny things you can change and regret to infinity.

- Do you have already planned a tour?

No, we don´t have a tour planned yet. There are some gigs booked though throughout Scandinavia.

- 2007 seems to be a really good year for the metal bands. So maybe it will be for you too. But what albums have you discovered this years and that blew you away? And more generally, what kind of music are you listening?

I sure hope so! :)
Well, I haven´t actually bought so many albums from this year, but so far it´s the latest 'Dark Tranquillity'-album which has so far won my heart.
Right now I´m mostly in to hardrock from the 70´s (for example Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Thin Lizzy), melodic death metal (for example In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Killswitch Engage, Soilwork, Memfis) and melodic metal in general.
This list could almost go on forever but I bring these genres up for the moment.
Of course I listen to progressive metal as well (not so much right now though). Dream Theater, Symphony X & Pain of Salvation (etc etc) have been inspiring to us all in the band I think.

- Is there a question you wanted me I ask you?

How do you members in Darkwater fix your amazing haircuts?  What hair products do you use?

- So you can answer it?

Sorry, it´s stricktly classified...

- So I let you the last words to our readers? Thank you to have answered my questions and good cluck for the future of the band.

Thank you very much! The pleasure was all mine.

Go out and buy our debut album "Calling the Earth to Witness"...of course! ;)
Thanks to everyone who have left a positive comment on our homepage, our Myspace-page or sent us e-mails! :)
