C'est à l'occasion de la sortie de "The Dark Gift EP" qu'il m'a été donné de m'entretenir par mail avec le compositeur de Satyrian, Jan Yrlund. Ce dernier, nous délivre ici ses points de vue et des informations sur le dernier EP de Satyrian et le précédent opus Eternitas sorti en il y a un an.

Bonjour, peux-tu s’il te plait, avant toute chose, te présenter toi et Satyrian?

Salut, je m’appelle Jan “Örkki” Yrlund et je suis guitariste et compositeur au sein de Satyrian; Le groupe est composé de musiciens venant des Pays Bas, de Finlande, d’Allemagne et de Serbie. On joue à la base du rock gothique atmosphérique avec des éléments métal. L’histoire du groupe commence en Décembre 2002 quand on a commencé à enregistrer notre premier album au Spacelab studio en Allemagne. Avant nous jouions sous un notre nom (Danse Macabre) mais nous avons viré notre chanteur qui était à l’origine du groupe alors nous avons changé notre nom. Par la même occasion nous avons recruté un nouveau chanteur: Roman. Notre album est sorti chez Lion Music au printemps 2006.

Quels sont les retours un an après la sortie de « Eternitas » ?

Je suis très satisfait. Nous avons eu bon nombre de chroniques et d’interviews. Cela a pris longtemps pour enfin pouvoir sortir cet album. Les gens semblent l’apprécier, après les efforts fournis, ça fait très plaisir. Je pense que c’est grâce à Lion Music que nous avons eu autant de chroniques dans la presse hard rock et progressive. Je suis surpris de voir que des gens qui écoutent ces styles apprécient notre musique, que je ne qualifierais pas de progressive. Mais ça fait plaisir…

Vous avez choisi de travailler sur la face électronique de votre musique avec « The Dark EP ». Quels sont les groupes que tu affectionnes ?

Oui, c’était une sorte d’expérience pour nous, depuis que Roman et moi en tant que producteurs expérimentons avec les compositions d’Eternitas. J’ai un petit studio où je peux faire ces expériences et parfois je suis transporté. J’écoute beaucoup de genres de musique et beaucoup d’électro notamment. Mais ce genre de musique doit avoir une sorte de côté sombre, car je n’aime aucun groupe de « happy dance music ». Sur la scène gothique l’electro/industrial est très présent et j’adore des groupes comme De/Vision, Nine Inch Nails entre autres. Mais aussi certains groupes plus heavy  avec des rythmiques plutôt dansantes comme White Zombie ou Slick Idiot. Sur Eternitas, on a Invictus qui est assez proche de ce style, mais je n’arriverais pas à faire un album entier de ce style là, je pense que le côté rock me manquerait trop.

Vous avez choisi de modifier des compositions de Eternitas. Pourquoi ne pas avoir composé de nouveaux morceaux ?

Oui, on avait de nouvelles compositions, mais c’était plus pour les clubs et aussi pour les fans ouverts qui voudraient écouter une autre version. Je pense que les nouvelles compositions qui sont « normales » n’auraient pas collé ici. C’est pourquoi je préfère me concentrer sur le nouvel album dans son entièreté. Ce sera peut-être un concept. Quoiqu’il en soit nous avons pensé que ça pouvait être intéressant pour les fans qui connaissaient déjà « Eternitas ».  

Comment es-tu rentré en contact avec TmV et Roman Schoensee qui t’ont aidé pour les remix ?

Et bien Roman est bien sûr notre chanteur et se devait évidemment d’être là car il avait fait de nombreux remix pour la scène gothique et pour un bon nombre de groupes. Il a travaillé pour The Crüxshadows, Liquido, Silke Bishof / 18 Summers, Funkervogt, Schok Therapy et d’autres groupes. Il est très actif sur cette scène.

TimV, je le connais depuis longtemps et il est de Tampere (Finlande) tout comme moi. On lance également un projet d’electro-fetish ensemble, le groupe s’appelle Sinmasters. On a déjà sorti quelques MCD et on travaille actuellement sur un album.

Il a également son propre label ce qui est pratique. TimV possède un bon studio où on peut travailler ensemble. Il est très talentueux dans ce genre-là je trouve.


Penses-tu qu’un jour, tu composeras un album entièrement électronique avec Satyrian ou sous un autre projet ?


Pas avec Satyrian, sûrement pas. Mais je ne veux pas me limiter à un seul style, donc tu pourras entendre différents éléments de ci de là. Satyrian restera un groupe de rock avec de vrais musiciens. Mais avec Sinmasters on est entrain de faire quelque chose comme ça même s’il y a encore quelques guitares. En dehors de ces deux groupes je n’ai pas d’ambition concernant un album Dance. Je vais faire quelques remix pour quelques groupes comme The Dreamside mais pas pour Satyrian.

Que peux-tu me dire à propos du prochain album de Satyrian ?

“It will rock” (je suis désolé ça se traduit pas selon moi ça :). Ce sera un album rock, peut-être un peu moins progressif que ce que fut Eternitas, mais je vais poursuivre dans un style similaire. Je ne suis pas encore sûr si ce sera plus un projet qu’un groupe, je veux me fermer aucune porte. Ce qui est sûr c’est qu’il y aura beaucoup de guitare, du piano et trois voix ce qui est devenu la marque de fabrique du groupe.

Comment conçois-tu la musique et ta musique? Est-ce un moyen d’exprimer ce que tu ressens ? Est-ce un moyen pour s’évader, pour rêver ? Ou bien encore une pièce de théâtre… Dis nous ce que t’en penses ?

La musique signifie beaucoup de choses pour moi et c’est quelque chose que je fais depuis vingt ans depuis que j’ai sorti mon premier album. J’ai joué du Speed Metal, du Thrash Metal, du Gothic Metal, de l’Opera Metal, du Black Metal, du Gothic rock, du Punk, du HC et même de l’électro. J’adore vraiment tout dans la musique. Les différents groupes sont juste un moyen pour exprimer différentes émotions en quelque sorte. Parfois t’écris une chanson métal qui ne collerait pas à Satyrian et parfois tu composes une chanson folk qui ne collerait pas à un groupe de métal (comme Imperia où je joue aussi). J’écoute et je joue tous les genres de musique que je peux. Mais jouer d’un instrument n’est pas un but en soi, le but c’est d’écrire de la bonne musique. Tout dépend de l’humeur dans laquelle je suis. Parfois je choisis de débuter une chanson par du piano parfois par de la guitare acoustique ou de la batterie. C’est comme un grand puzzle dans ta tête qui demande à être résolu. Une fois achevé on obtient de la grande musique que l’on peut partager.

Comment composes-tu ta musique? Quelle est la fonction et l’importance des textes pour toi ?


A la base avec Satyrian j’écrivais tout. Donc nous ne faisions pas ça tous ensemble. Mais on fait les arrangements ensemble et aussi avec notre producteur et pianiste Oliver Philipps  qui tient un rôle majeur. Les chanteurs/euses jouent également un rôle important car ils inventent les lignes de chants. Les paroles sont importantes pour nous mais depuis que je ne les écris plus je ne peux pas dire quelle est leur importance pour les chanteurs. Mais j’imagine que quand tu écris à propos de tes sentiments les plus profonds les paroles deviennent très importantes. De bonnes paroles sont évidemment importantes, mais je regarde plus la musique avec une vision  de musicien. Mais j’ai remarqué que lorsque je lis de bonnes paroles dans ma langue maternelle, cela me touche beaucoup.

Quels sont tes thèmes et sujets favoris que ce soit dans la littérature et les films ? Quels livres ou films aimes-tu et dans quelle mesure cela influence ta musique ?

J’aime beaucoup les musiques de films mais celles-ci n’ont pas un impact direct sur ma musique. Il est bien sûr difficile de dire si nous sommes conscients d’être influencés par quelque chose, mais quoiqu’il en soit ça trotte toujours dans ta tête. D’une certaine manière, de bonnes bandes originales de films peuvent t’inspirer. Comme parfois, tu as un thème principal fort qui se répète tout au long du film. Pour des raisons étranges, c’est assez souvent qu’après avoir vu ce genre de films je m’assois derrière mon piano, haha.
Je regarde beaucoup de films et lis beaucoup de livres, principalement de la fantaisie et de la science fiction mais je ne pourrais pas vraiment te dire si cela a des effets sur le songwriting. En fait, je ne pense pas.

Quelle question espérais-tu que je te pose ? Réponds à cette question…

Quand venez-vous jouer en France ? Et bien, comme certains l’ont vu nous avions prévu un show à Paris, mais malheureusement nous avons dû annuler ce show pour des raisons relatives au groupe. C’était très triste mais on va essayer de se rattraper dans l’avenir, c’est promis.
Je voudrais remercier spécialement Acropole Records pour leur foi et le lourd travail qu’ils fournissent pour nous programmer des dates. Nous allons venir et nous espérons tous vous voir là bas.

Hello, first could you please introduce yourself and Satyrian?

Hi there, my name is Jan “Örkki” Yrlund and I am the guitar player and the songwriter of Satyrian. The band is an international team of musicians from The Netherlands, Finland, Germany and Serbia and we play basically atmospheric gothic rock with a slice of metal to it. The story of the band goes back to December 2002 when we started recording our album in the Spacelab studio in Germany. Back then we operated under a different name but after we kicked out our former singer we changed the name and acquired a new male singer Roman. The album was released by Lion Music in the spring of 2006.

What are the feedbacks one year after the release of Eternitas?

I’m really satisfied with all the reviews and interviews. It took a long time to get this album released so it feels very good that people seem to appreciate our hard work. I think because of the label we got a lot of reviews in the hard rock and progressive scene, which we never have had before. I’m surprised to see that people in those genres seem to like the album even though I wouldn’t call it progressive at all. But that is nice to notice…

You have chosen to work on the electro side of your music with The Dark Gift EP. What are the electro bands you like?

Yes, this was a kind of an experiment for us since both Roman and also me like the producers chair and like to fool around with different sounds and samples. I have a small studio where I can make these experiments and sometimes I just get carried away too. I listen to a lot of different kinds of music, and some electro bands too. But also that kind of music has to have some kind of dark edge to it and I don’t like any happy dance music. In Gothic scene the electro/industrial side is very much present and I like a lot of different bands like De/Vision, NIN and others. And especially heavier bands with danceable rhythms like White Zombie,  Slick Idiot and so on. On “Eternitas” we already had the song “Invictus” which comes close to that kind of style, but I wouldn’t do a whole album like that. I guess I just would miss the rock side of it.  

You modified the compositions you created for Eternitas. Why don’t you have composed new songs?

Oh yes we have new songs too, but this was more meant for the clubs and airplay and perhaps also for open minded fans who would like to hear alternative versions. I think that the new “normal” songs would not have fitted here. So I prefer to concentrate on the new album as a whole, maybe as a concept, instead of breaking the songs up for smaller releases. Anyway we felt that this might be an interesting release for the fans who already know “Eternitas”.

How do you get in touch with TmV and Roman Schoensee who help you for the remixes?

Well Roman is of course our singer and he was an obvious choice since he has done a lot of remixes in the gothic scene for many known bands. He has worked for The Crüxshadows, Liquido, Silke Bishof / 18 Summers, Funkervogt, Schok Therapy and other bands. So he is really much in that scene. TimV I know a long time and he’s from the same city of Tampere in Finland as I’m from too. Besides that we run an electro-fetish project together called Sinmasters.

We have released a couple of MCDs and are working on the first full length now. Besides that he has his own record label, which is handy to have. TimV has a very nice studio where we can work things out together. He’s really talented in this kind of things I find…

Do you think one day you will composed a full electronic album with Satyrian or another project?

Not with Satyrian surely not. But I don’t want to limit myself to a certain style either so you will be hearing these elements here and there, but Satyrian will always stay as a rock band with real musicians. But with Sinmasters we are in fact doing something like that though it also has some guitars there. Besides these bands I don’t have an ambition to go for a full dance album. I will be doing some remixes for other bands like The Dreamside, but not for Satyrian.

What can you tell me about the next Satyrian release?

It will rock. It will be a rock album, maybe a bit less progressive as “Eternitas” was, but it will continue the similar style. I’m not sure yet if it will be more a project as a band in the future and I want to keep all the doors open. But surely you will hear a lot of guitar, piano and the three voices which have become a trademark of the band.

What’s your conception of music and of your music? Is it way to express what you feel? Is it way to escape from reality, to dream? Or like a play maybe… Tell us what you think about it?

The music means a lot to me and this is something I’ve done already 20 years when I released my first album. I’ve played Speed Metal, Thrash Metal, Gothic Metal, Opera Metal, Black Metal, Gothic rock, Punk, HC and even electro. So I enjoy everything in music. The different bands are just a way to express different emotions in a way. Sometimes you write a metal song, which would not fit to Satyrian and sometimes a folk song which wouldn’t fit to the metal band (like the band Imperia I also play in). So basically I listen and play every kind of music I’m able to play. But playing an instrument itself is not a goal, but to write nice music. And what that will be depends about the mood I am in. Sometimes I choose to start the song with the piano, sometimes with acoustic guitar or a drumbeat. It’s like a huge puzzle in your head which asks to be solved. And it gives me great pleasure to finish a song and to get it released so that others can hear it too…

How do you compose your music? Which are the function and the importance of the lyrics for you?

Basically with Satyrian I wrote all the music so we don’t do that with the band. But we arrange everything together and also our producer / pianist Oliver Philipps has a major role in this. Also the singers play a big role when inventing melody lines for the vocals. The lyrics are important for us but since I don’t write those I can’t comment the importance for the singers. But I can imagine that when you write about your deep emotions then it has to be very important. A good piece of lyrics is important of course, but I look personally music more from the musician’s side. But I’ve noticed that when I hear a good lyric in my mother language, I can get really touched by it.

What are your favourites themes and topics in music, literature, films? What books and films you like and in what measure it influences your music?

I enjoy film score music a lot, but those don’t have a direct effect on my music. It is of course hard to say if you are not aware of being influenced by something, but it sticks somewhere in your mind. In a way a good piece of film music can inspire you. Like sometimes you have a strong main theme which repeats in the movie. For some strange reason it is pretty often that after seeing this kind of movie I find myself sitting behind the piano, haha.
Anyways I do watch a lot of movies and read a lot of books, mainly fantasy and science fiction but I really couldn’t tell if those affect the songwriting. I don’t think so actually.

What question you hoped I ask you? And answer to this question…

When do you come to play in France? Well as some noticed we had a booked show in Paris, but due to some unfortunate reasons from our side we had to cancel the show. That was really sad since we were already so much looking forward to it! However, we promised to make it up later and we surely will!  Therefore I’d like to thank especially Acropole Recods for the faith and the hard work for arranging shows for us. We will come over and I hope we will see you all down there then!
