En 2006, Communic sort son deuxième album. Album qui fut pour moi le meilleur album de l'année grâce à sa musique complexe et ses textes très dénonciateurs et engagés .
Avec Communic, bienvenue à la réalité de notre monde ...

1) Pour commencer, présente-toi aux lecteurs d'Heavylaw !

Hey salut à tous, je me nomme Oddleif, chanteur, compositeur et guitariste de Communic .


2) Maintenant raconte-nous l'histoire de ton groupe .

Nous sommes un groupe basé dans le sud de la Norvège, mais vraiment le sud sud, tu ne peux pas être plus au sud . Le groupe est né en Mars 2003, mais ça fait à peu près 10 ans que nous sommes dans l'underground avec nos différents groupes et autres projets . Pour faire court, j'étais le chanteur dans un groupe local, et c'est là que j'ai rencontré Tor Atle (batterie) . Je me considère principalement comme un guitariste et un compositeur, donc faire juste la voix sur la musique de quelqu'un d'autre ne me convenait pas, je trouvais ça ennuyant, et c'est ainsi que j'ai commencé à réfléchir à la formation de mon propre groupe . Un jour j'ai demandé à Atle s'il voulait me rejoindre dans un studio de la région (qu'on pouvait utiliser gratuitement) pour un week end, et là nous avons enregistré 4 chansons pour le fun sans avoir répété avant . On a trouvé que ça sonnait bien et j'ai appelé Erik, avec qui j'avais joué dans un autre groupe , pour lui demander s'il voulait bien venir en studio afin de mettre des lignes de bass plus poussées sur les chansons . Il l'a fait, et c'est ainsi que Communic est né . On a commencé à travailler pour faire une démo pro et nous avons enregistré 3 chansons qui nous parraissaient montrer le potentiel du groupe .
Juste après, nous avons donc sorti cette démo, obtenu un deal avec un manager, et signé un contrat avec le très respecté label Nuclear Blast . Aujourd'hui tous les membres sont focalisés que sur Communic, mis à part nos jobs...

3) Pourquoi avoir choisi ce nom ? A-t-il une signification ?

C'est juste que ça sonnait bien . Je trouve aussi qu'il a une consonnance très Métal, ca vient du mot « Communiquer », et c'est ce que nous essayons de faire avec notre musique .


4) Avant la création de Communic, tu étais dans les groupes Ingermaland et Scariot . Pourquoi avoir quitté ces groupes ?

Scariot commencait à devenir trop ennuyant et la musique était en train de changer vers un style plus agressif, ce dont je n'aimais pas trop, et j'ai donc décidé de quitter avec mes propres idées .
Ingermaland était mon propre projet , donc je ne l'ai jamais vraiment quitté . Je l'ai mis de côté dès que je suis rentré chez Scariot, donc pour moi Ingermaland est devenu Communic, en fait c'est le même groupe avec un autre batteur et une approche de la musique différente je pense .


5)Est-ce que ça a été difficile d'avoir un contrat avec Nuclear Blast ? Quand, pourquoi et comment es-tu entré en contact avec eux ?

C'est une longue histoire, mais je vais essayer de faire court . Beaucoup de personnes pensent que nous venons de nulle part, mais cela fait de nombreuses années que nous trainons dans l'underground avec nos différents groupes essayant de faire reconnaître notre musique à sa juste valeur grâce à nos démos et tout le travail fourni, mais tout ceci ne nous a jamais mené à rien .
Puis j'ai donc formé Communic après avoir joué 3 années chez Scariot . En fait, cette fois j'ai voulu tenté une toute autre approche, en essayant d'un angle différent, et ça s'est avéré être la bonne formule pour nous . Comme je l'ai dit , nous avons essayé de la manière la plus dure à travers le monde de l'underground et les nombreux concerts que nous avons faits vers chez nous. Mais cela nous a menés nulle part ...Nous savions que nous avions de bonnes chansons et nous voulions faire la démo la plus professionnelle que possible, avec une excellente production afin de montrer le vrai potentiel du groupe . L'idée n'était pas d'envoyer cette démo à tout le monde, donc seulement 100 copies de celle-ci ont été faites . Notre premier objectif était de trouver un bon management, et nous l'avons trouvé juste après que la démo soit faite .
Puis nous avons été en contact avec Nuclear Blast car ils ont bien apprécié notre démo, mais avec notre management nous avons commencé à avoir de nombreuses discussions avec d'autres labels qui étaient sur notre liste . Puis, au même moment, une des 100 copies de notre démo est arrivée chez RockHard magazine et est devenue « La démo du mois » dans une chronique et une des chansons s'est retrouvée dans un cd sampler de Heavy Order , et je pense que là les labels ont commencé à nous surveiller de plus près . Et après quelques mois nous avons reçu des propositions de partout , mais finalement nous avons choisi Nuclear Blast, et maintenant nous avons déjà deux albums chez eux .


6)Es-tu satisfait de leur travail ?

Oui, jusqu'à maintenant tout a marché parfaitement .

7)Beaucoup de personnes décrivent Communic comme étant le successeur de Nevermore . Qu'en penses-tu ?

Personnellement je ne pense pas que ça soit si similaire que ça mais je comprends que les gens cherchent à tout prix à nous comparer avec d'autres groupes, et je pense que d'après eux c'est de Nervermore que l'on se rapproche le plus . Ca ne me dérange pas vraiment, je prends plutot ca comme un compliment . C'est pas facile de décrire ce que nous faisons, du Métal, Power, Progressif, Thrash avec beaucoup d'émotions .


8)Quelles sont tes principales influences ?

Les premiers groupes américains de Thash Métal du début des années 90, Megadeth, Testament, Metallica et les autres . Puis plus tard je me suis mis de plus en plus au prog avec Fates Warning, Queensryche, Psychotich Waltz. Ayreon est également un groupe que j'aime beaucoup .


9)Le premier album de Communic est sorti en 2005 et il a reçu de nombreuses bonnes critiques à travers le monde du Métal. Comment tu t'es senti entre la fin de l'enregistrement et la sortie officielle ?

Déjà je me suis senti tout content d'avoir pu finir l'enregistrement, nous avons travaillé énormément sur cet album, et je pense qu'il est proche de la perfection . Il n'y a vraiment pas grand chose que j'ai envie de changer sur cet album . Entre le studio et la sortie, nous ne nous sommes pas vraiment inquiétés car nous étions confiants . Juste après nous sommes rentrés chez nous et avons commencé à travailler sur de nouvelles idées qui sont arrivées sur le deuxième album, donc on ne s'est pas assis en attendant que quelque chose se passe .

10)Le deuxième album est arrivé seulement un an après . L'inspiration devait être au rendez-vous pour faire deux albums en deux ans . Pourquoi ne pas avoir attendu un peu plus longtemps ?

Comme je l'ai dit, nous avons commencé à travailler sur ce deuxième album juste après le premier . Nous avons juste fait une courte tournée, et après on n'avait plus rien à faire, alors pourquoi rester assis et rien faire ?  Nous aimons bien passer du temps dans notre salle de répétition, c'est là que les chansons sont créées et il y a une très bonne ambiance . Je pense qu'on a bien fait de faire ça .


11)Parlons un peu des lyrics maintenant . Les deux albums sont à propos des problèmes sociaux, peut-on dire que les deux albums sont donc des concepts ?

Je ne les appelle pas des concepts, mais je pense que l'on y trouve un sujet commun, car en fait chaque chanson est une histoire unique .


12)Y a-t-il des relations entre ces deux albums ?

C'est le même groupe, les même musiciens, le même studio et ainsi de suite, on retrouve aussi le titre du dernier album dans les paroles d'une des chansons du premier album. Les sujets abordés sont également pratiquement les mêmes .

13)Peut- on dire que tu dénonces la société ?

Non je ne pense pas. Je vois plus celà comme soulever des questions, regarder de manière différente le monde dans lequel nous vivons. Car le monde n'est pas une place heureuse où vivre, même si la plupart d'entre nous paraissons satisfaits. En fait tout le monde essaie d'ignorer ce qui se passe et de se concentrer sur son propre univers.

14)Comment écris-tu les lyrics ?

Généralement j'utilise un stylo, ou bien sûr mon ordinateur, ça dépend dans quel état d'esprit je me trouve ...  :)


15) Ma chanson favorite de l'album est Frozen Asleep In The Park. Peux-tu nous faire un commentaire Track By Track des 7 chansons de l'album ?

Track 1: "Under a luminous sky" est plutôt heavy pour une première chanson, elle vous frappe à la tête à peine l'album inséré. Il y a un changement de tempo assez classe au milieu et tout de suite plusieurs riffs vraiment difficiles à jouer et à chanter, mais j'adore jouer cette chanson en live .

Track 2 "Frozen asleep in the dark" est souvent la préférée parmi les fans que nous rencontrons. Elle parle d'une femme ivre, droguée et sans maison, le secret de famille dont personne ne parle. Nous voyons toutes sortes de choses arriver partout dans le monde, même en Norvège qui est un pays riche, nous les voyons mais personne ne fait rien à part essayer de les ignorer. Ne jamais révéler le secret de famille!

Track 3: « Whatching it all disappear» est la première chanson que nous avons faite pour cet album. Plutot soft et détendue avant que le choeur craque et devienne assez heavy avant que l'on fasse retomber tout encore à la fin.

Track 4: "Fooled by the serpent"  est la plus heavy des chansons de l'album . Vraiment heavy en live aussi. C'est une chanson longue avec sa part de passages difficiles autant sages que provoquants.

Track 5: « Waves of visual decay »  C'est mon morceau favori pour le moment. encore une chanson que nous commençons assez soft avant de tomber dans un trouble melodique, juste comme on les aime.

Track 6: My bleeding victim est probablemment la chanson avec l'avance la plus droite de l'album, l'histoire portant sur un serial killer ,elle est bien groovy. Ca fait un bail qu'on ne l'a pas jouée en live. Généralement nous n'avons pas assez de temps sur scène pour jouer toutes les chansons que l'on voudrait, c'est le problème quand vous n'avez qu'à choisir parmi des chansons longues...

Track 7. la dernière chanson de l'album, « At dewy prime. » Vraiment longue, presque un sentiment epic.. elle est toute disposée à conclure l'album, elle est inspirée d'une vieille histoire locale.

16)La cover de Waves Of Visual Decay est vraiment splendide, qui l'a faite ? Et toi, comment tu la trouves ?

Merci, ça fait plaisir d'entendre ça. C'est Anthony Clarcson qui s'en est occupé, et il a fait un excellent travail .  Je la trouve également magnifique et je pense qu'elle reflète parfaitement ce que nous parlons dans nos chansons .


17)Par contre, la cover du premier album est plus spéciale, a-t-elle une signification ?

C'est à celui qui écoute l'album de donner sa propre signification, mais elle est également liée aux paroles de nos chansons .


18)Sur les deux albums, c'est toujours un « guest » pour le clavier . Pourquoi ne pas prendre un claviériste permanent ?

Le clavier n'est pas vraiment important en live pour nous, donc on n'a choisi de l'utiliser que sur certaines parties de l'album, afin de faire quelques sons en arrière-plan . Nous avons essayé les claviers en live, mais ça sonnait trop bien, hehe... C'est plus basique, plus brut, plus Heavy avec la batterie, la bass et la guitare .


19)Comment s'est passée la tournée avec Scar Symmetry ?

La tournée était géniale, nous avons passé un excellent moment . J'adore voyager et faire des concerts, c'est à ce moment-là que tu vois les retours et la réaction du public . Parfois c'est chiant d'attendre dans les différents aéroports et hotels, mais quand on arrive sur scène, on oublie tout .


20)Comment expliques-tu la montée en puissance ces dernières années du Heavy Métal Norvégien ?

Ah, la Norvège n'est pas un pays facile quand on en vient à parler Métal. La scène Extreme est immense ici, et tout le monde pense tout de suite au Metal Extreme quand on dit qu'on vient de Norvège . Il semblerait qu'il y ait plus de groupes de Thrash et Progressif qui sortent de chez nous maintenant , et j'espère que bientôt les gens parleront autant de la scène Heavy Mélodique que Extreme .


21)Quels sont tes plans pour le futur ?

Nous avons de nombreux festivals cet été, donc je pense que ça va être très agité. Nous avons commencé à bosser sur ce qui sera notre 3ème album, mais je n'ai aucune idée de quand se fera l'entrée en studio .


22)Un dernier mot pour les fans ?

To begin with, I think you should present yourself .

Hey all, my name is Oddleif, the vocalist and guitarplayer in Communic


Now tell us everything about your band Communic (history and the others members, etc...)

We are a band based on the south tip of Norway, actually as south as you can get. Communic as a band was born in March  2003, but we have been around in the underground for around ten years now in different bands and projects. In short notes, I was doing time as vocalist in another local band, it was here I first met up with Tor Atle (Drums). I mainly consider myself as a guitar player and songwriter, so just doing vocals on someone else's music was kinda boring in the long run, and I had been fooling around with the ideas of forming a new band. One day I asked Tor Atle if he wanted to join me for a weekend in a local studio that we could use for free, we recorded 4 songs just to have some fun, and didn’t have any rehearsals up front. We thought that it ended up sounding cool and I called up Erik, that I had played together with in other projects and asked if he was willing to drop into the studio to put some bass on the songs. He did and then COMMUNIC was born. We started working on the material for a "pro" demo and recorded three songs that we thought showed the potential of the band. Immediately after we released the demo, we signed a management deal and in the end signed a record deal with well respected Nuclear Blast. Today every member have full focus on Communic, besides our daytime jobs.


Why did you choose this name ? Does it mean something ?

It sounded cool. Had a metallic ring to it, and was taken out of the word communicate, and that is what we try to do with our music.

Before the creation of Communic you were in Ingermaland and  Scariot . Why did you leave this two bands ?

Scariot became to boring in the long run and the music changed into more aggressive forms that I didn’t like to much so I desided to move on with my own ideas. Ingermanland was my own project so I never left this one, I put it on ice when I was in Scariot so for me, Ingermanland turned into COMMUNIC, its basically the same band with a new drummer, and with a different approach to the music I guess.


Was it difficult to have a deal with the label Nuclear Blast ? When, Why and how did you enter in contact with them ?

That a pretty long story, but Ill give you the short version. Most people think we are coming from out of nowhere, but we have actually been around for many years now, trying to get our music reckon through different bands during the past ten years, pushing demos and stuff through the underground and other sources but it didn’t get us anywhere. Then I formed COMMUNIC after playing in Scariot for almost 3 years. The thing is that I wanted to approach it all from a different angle this time, and it turned out to be the right way for us. As I said, we had tried the "hard way", through the underground and through numerous concerts in our local area, but it didn't do it for us. It didn't get us anywhere... We knew that we had some cool songs, and wanted to make an as professional demo as possible, with as good production as possible, that really would show the potential in our band and material. The Idea was to NOT send the demo out to all and everyone, so we only printed only 100 copies, and was aiming to get the band signed to a decent management as the first task, and it was found soon after the demo was done. We had already been in contact with Nuclear Blast that really liked the demo, but together with the management we started to work more directly towards different labels that we had on our list, to get the band signed. Also at the same time, one of the demos found its way to RockHard magazine that gained it as the "demo of the month" in a review, and one of the songs ended up at a Heavy Oder Was magazine sampler, and I guess a few labels recognized this and kept an eye out for us, and after just a few months after the demo was recorded, we had a few interested parties that wanted to work with us, and the final decision landed on Nuclear Blast, and now we already have two albums out there.


Are you satisfy of their work ?

Yes, so far everything has worked out perfect.


Many people describe your music like the successor or Nevermore . What is your feelings about that ? Can you describe the style of the band ?

Personally I don’t think that it is that similar but I can understand why people struggle to find someone to compare us with, and then I think Nevermore is maybe the closest they get. It don’t worry me, its more like a complement. Its not easy to describe what we do but it is metal, power, progressive, thrash and a lot of emotions thrown together into somne kind of system I guess..


What are the main influences for the music ? (and your favourite bands as well)

Early american thrash metal from the early nineties, Megadeth, Testament, Metallica and so on. Later on I got more into progressive metal like Fates Warning, Queensryche, Psychotich Waltz. Ayreon is also something that I really like.


Your first album was release in 2005 and it receive many good reviews all over the world . How was you feeling between the end of the recording and the release ? What are your feeling now about this first album ? Surprised ?

It felt good to finally have it done, we had worked a lot on the material, and I think that it is close to perfect still. Not much that I want to change on that one. Between studio and the actual releas we didn’t worry because we had a good feeling. We actually went home and started to work on new ideas that ended up on Waves… album so we didn’t sit around waithing for whatever happening.

Your second album was release just one year later ! You were a lot inspired to make a second album in 2 two years ? Why haven’t you wait a little bit longer ?

As I said, we started rigth away working with new stuff. We did a short tour and then we didn’t have that much to do, so why sit and wait. We enjoy the time we spend in our rehearshal room, that is where the songs are created and a good friendship has developed. So I think that it was vise to do it this way.


We will speak about the lyrics now . The two albums deals with social problems, can we say that your two albums are concepts albums ?

I don’t call them consepts, but I think that you may find a red tread that runs through the songs, but they are all small stories on their own.


Are there any relations between the albums ?

It’s the same band, same musicans, same studio and so on, and the title for the latest album is also to find in one of the lines on our debut, and I was dealing with some of the same topics.


Maybe we could say that you denounce the society ?

No, I don’t think so, its more like raising some questions, looking from a different direction, about the world we live in, and the world is not a happy place these days, even dough most of us are doing fine it seems like everyone is trying to ignore some of the stuff going on and just concentrating on living inside their own universal sphere.


How are you writing the lyrics ?

Usually Im using a pen, or my computer, dipends on where I am or what mood I am in… 


My favourite song in the last album is “Frozen Asleep In The Park” . I really love this one . Maybe , if you are agree, you can make a comment track by track of the seven songs of the new album . The french fans will more understand 

Track 1: “Under a luminous sky” is a pretty heavy opener, Hits you in the face at once you put on the album. It has a cool temo change in the middle and some really difficult riff to play and sing at once, but still I like to play this song live.

Track 2: “Frozen Asleep In The Dark" is often chosen as a favourite among the fans that we meet. Its about a drunken, drugged and homeless lady, the family secret that nobody talks about. We see this things going on all over the world, also in Norway that is know to be a wealthy country, we see these things happening, and nobody do anything about it, other than trying to ignore – Never reveal the family secret!

Track 3: “Whatching it all disappear” is the first song that we had ready for this album. Quite soft and mellow untill it cracks in the chorus and gets quite heavy before we take it all down again in the end.

Track 4: “ Fooled by the serpent” is the heavyest song on the album. Real heavy in the live show as well. Long song with loads of challenging parts both playing wise and on the more thought provoking level !!!

Track 5: The title track “Waves of visual decay”. This one is my favourite at the moment. Another track where we start out quite soft, and the it cracks into a melodic mayhem, just the way we like it.

Track 6: “My bleeding victim” is probably the most straight forward song on the album, story about a serial killer. It has a cool groove. Its been a while since we played this one live. We usually don’t get enough stage time to play through all the songs that we want to, that’s a problem when you have mostly long songs to pick from…

Track 7. The final song on the album, “At dewy prime”. A really long, almost epic feel over it… this one works perfect as a closer to the album, and is inspired by an old local story.


The cover of “Waves Of Visual Decay” is one of the most beautiful cover I have ever see!  Who did it ? Do you like it too ?

Thanks, that is really nice to hear. It was made by Anthony Clarcson, and he did a fantastic job. I like it a lot myself and I think that it reflects most of the topics that runs through the album.


The cover of the first album is more “special” . What is its signification ?

That us up to the listener to make up their own thought about, but it has a special link to the lyrics as well, just as the “Waves…” cover do.


On your albums , there is always a “guest” for the keyboard. Why don’t you take a permanent member ?

The keys are not that important to us in the live set, so we have chosen just to use it on minor parts on the albms, to make some sounds in the background. We have tried with keyboards live as well, but I guess it sounded to nice, hehe… Its more heavy with the basics, drums, bass and guitar.


How was your tour with Scar Symmetry ? ! Do you like doing concerts ?

The tour was great. We had a great time. I like to travel and to play live, that is when you get the real feedback from the audience. Sometimes it’s a hazzle with the waiting in different airports and hotels, but when you hit the stage, everything else is forgotten. That is what its all about.


How would you explain that nowadays Norway is becoming famous for its heavy metal band in despite of its Extreme metal scene ?

Ah, Norway isn't easy when it comes to metal. Extreme metal is quite big and everybody expects aggressive and extreme metal when you say that you come from Norway. It seems like there are more thrash and progressive metal coming strong now, so hopefully we get more of the „melodic“ metal from Norway out as well.


What have you planned for the future ? A third album in 2007 ? :D

We have loads of festivals lined up for the spring and summer, so I think it will be quite hectic, but we have started to work on what will be our third album, but I have no idea when we can enter studio at this time.
