Voici l’occasion de faire le point avec son maître à penser M Heleno VALE qui est à la fois le batteur, l’auteur du concept, l’auteur des compositions, bref le seul maître à bord mais qui a su réunir et fédérer autour de lui une pléiade d’artistes. Bonjour et merci du temps que tu nous dédie. The Labyrinth of Truths est disponible maintenant et voici le moment d’en parler avec toi.
H: Bonjour! Je te remercie de l'intérêt et de nous donner l'occasion de parler un peu de notre travail.

Commet as-tu eu l’idée de cet opera metal? Qu’elle est l’inspiration à la base de The Labyrinth of Truths ?
H: Un de mes amis m'a raconté une histoire vraie à propos d’étranges visions qu'il avait.
J'ai trouvé l'histoire très intéressante et j’ai ajouté un peu de fiction. J'ai fini par écrire  l'histoire du premier acte A legacy of honor. Considérant que j'aime la musique et tout ce qui s'y rapporte, j'ai commencé à penser à un opéra métal quand j'ai réalisé qu’il y avait de nombreux musiciens de talent, ici au Brésil. J'ai pensé qu’un opéra métal serait une bonne occasion pour eux de montrer leur travail et que chaque chanteur pourrait donner vie à chaque personnage de l'histoire que j'avais créée. L'histoire du premier album, "A Legacy of Honor", ne s'arrête pas là et j'ai toujours eu à l'esprit de la poursuivre dans un prochain album. Donc, nous y sommes arrivés avec The Labyrinth of Truths qui est une continuation de l'histoire du premier acte et qui peut se vanter d’artistes internationaux.

Est-ce que tu travailles d’abord l’histoire de l’opéra et après tu écris chaque morceau ?
H: J’écris l'histoire et je commence à réfléchir à des chansons qui représenteront les événements.

Est-ce que tu écris d’abord les paroles ou la musique ?
H: D’abord j’écris la musique mais je tiens bien présent à l’esprit l'histoire et les sentiments de chaque passage. Je commence à penser aux lignes vocales et aux paroles à partir des sentiments des personnages que je développe car je pense que la musique décrit mieux les états d’âmes que les mots que nous utilisons pour les représenter.

Peux-tu nous parler du concept qui est présenté sur The Labyrinth of Truths ?
H: The Labyrinth of Truths  est une fiction avec de nombreuses créatures. Il y a  des humains, des bêtes, des démons, des anges, des dragons et bien d'autres personnages avec des personnalités très particulières. Ce que je voulais élucider ici, c'est que chaque être, quelle que soit sa puissance, est capable de changer son propre destin, ainsi que les autres, que n'importe qui peut faire la différence et que l’acte de prendre et d’assumer ses décisions révèle toujours d’un combat intérieur. Même un garçon de quinze ans, un humble bûcheron ou un puissant dragon d'autres dimensions sont tout aussi importants dans le contexte général de l'univers.

Quels sont tes sources d’inspirations ? (livres, artistes, films, jeux vidéos ?)
H: Eh bien, la liste est assez longue et sans doute je vais en oublier (lol), mais je vais faire un essai: Le cycle d’Arthur, Bernard Cornwell, Le Seigneur des Anneaux,  J.R.R. Tolkien, Brida Paulo Coelho, Shogun - James Clavell
Artistes : Kevin Spacey, Kate Winslet, Hilary Swank et Débora Falabella
Films: Le Seigneur des Anneaux, La Belle et la Bête, Signes, American   Beauty, Pax K, The Green Mile, Requiem for a Dream, El Laberinto del Fauno  
Jeux vidéo (ils sont tous très vieux, parce qu'il y a longtemps que je ne joue plus mais j'ai joué beaucoup lol): Golden Ax, Megamen X, Mario Bros, Street Fighter II, Samurai Shodown, Super Mario Kart (World  Record)

Comment as-tu réunis tous ces artistes ? Et-ce que ceci a été facile ?
H: Comme j'aime beaucoup la musique et puisque j’ai joué dans de nombreux groupes dans ma vie, j’ai des contacts avec beaucoup de musiciens et je passe tout mon temps libre avec eux dès que je le peux. Lors de l'enregistrement du premier album, j'ai rencontré de nombreux musiciens et ceux-ci m'ont présenté à d'autres. L’enregistrement terminé, je connaissais beaucoup de gens et il était assez facile d'entrer en contact avec eux. Il a été étonnamment facile de tous les réunir. Ils sont tous très différents, mais très sympathiques
et ils ont tous aimé mon travail. Aussi nous parlions la même langue, comme nous
sommes tous très passionnés en ce qu’il concerne la musique.

Comment s’est passé l’enregistrement ?
H: Il nous a fallu beaucoup de temps pour enregistrer le deuxième album. Il nous a fallu plus d’une année pour le terminer, depuis la première fois que nous avons mis pied dans le studio.
L'ambiance était toujours très drôle, décontracté, sympathique et professionnelle aussi : il a fallu beaucoup de temps aux musiciens qui enregistraient leurs partitions jusqu'à atteindre ce que nous pensions être un niveau parfait. Bien que j’aie terminé toutes les chansons avant de commencer l’enregistrement de l'album, j’ai créé beaucoup de choses grâce à eux et grâce à l'aide de Tito Falaschi, notre producteur.

Est-ce que tu es satisfait du résultat final ? Et-ce qu’il y a des choses que tu changerais ?
H: Pour être honnête, je suis très satisfait du résultat cette fois et il n’y a absolument rien que  je changerais de cet album. Le mixage et le mastering nous ont vraiment prit du temps aussi, mais le résultat final est vraiment bon et la qualité est excellente!

Quel est l’artiste avec qui tu as travaillé le mieux ?
H: C'est difficile de répondre à cette question. Sincèrement J’ai aimé travailler avec eux tous. Chacun a fait de son mieux et a contribué de telle sorte que cet album est devenu
ce qu'il est. Bien sûr, j’ai passé plus de temps avec certains d'entre eux en raison d’affinités personnelles, alors je suis devenu un ami très proche de Jefferson Albert
et j'aime vraiment travailler avec Leandro Caçoilo. Mais, en fin de compte, tout le monde
a été très professionnel et a apporté à ce travail sa touche personnelle.

Que penses-tu de l’apport des filles (Daisa Munhoz et Manuela Saggioro) ?
H: Je dois dire que j’aime bien quand la conversation porte sur les filles (lol). Je suis un de leurs fans depuis la première fois que je les ai vues jouer ensemble. Elles ont un
groupe et elles ont joué ensemble pendant les 6 dernières années et je pense que,
mis à part le talent évident individuel de chacune d'elles, elles sont
absolument parfaites pour chanter ensemble, elles forment une véritable symbiose, et je pense que ceci se ressent sur l’album. J'aime beaucoup la voix forte de Daisa et l’interprétation qu’elle donne aux parties qu'elle chante. Manuela fait un duo avec Edu Falaschi sur le
dernier titre « A secret compartment » qui me donne la chair de poule
à chaque fois que je l'écoute, et je peux te dire que je l'écoute souvent (lol)!

Quel est l’artiste que tu aurais voulu avoir pour cette œuvre mais que tu n’as pas pu avoir ?
H: Il y a beaucoup d'artistes qui sont mes idoles et il y en a beaucoup d'entre eux que  j’aimerais avoir à bord. Le fait est que j'ai trouvé la voix parfaite pour
chacun de mes personnages, donc je ne pense pas qu'il puisse y avoir  « une personne manquante » à cet album. Mais nous avons encore l'Acte 3, 4, 5, ... à venir (lol). Tim Ripper, Blaze Bayley et Michael Vescera ont déjà enregistré leurs voix pour le troisième
album, qui devrait être publié l'année prochaine.

Vous tournez au Brésil ? Comment sa se passe ? Quels sont les musiciens qui peuvent assurer les dates live ?
H: Nous allons commencer demain notre tour (24 octobre) et nous sommes tous très  impatients. A ce premier concert participent Edu Falaschi, Pastore Mário, Linhares Mário, Albert Jefferson, Munhoz Daisa et Manuela Saggioro. Nous avons prévu une tournée dans la plupart des villes les plus importantes du Brésil. Chaque concert aura ses propres invités spéciaux, de sorte que chaque chanteur aura la chance d'être sur la route avec nous.


Est-ce que tu envisage de tourner ailleurs qu’au Brésil ? En Europe peut être ?
H: C'est effectivement notre but. Nous prévoyons d'organiser nos concerts partout dans le
monde et nous préparons un spectacle très particulier, très différent de ce que
les gens sont habitués à voir.

Quel regard portes-tu sur la scène metal brésilienne ? Quels sont tes coups de cœurs ?
H: Je pense qu'il y a beaucoup de bons groupes ici en attente de dénicher le gros lot. J'aime beaucoup les groupes brésiliens comme Angra, Pastore, Tierra Mistica, Wizards, Dark Avenger, Mortis Imago, Hibria.

Quel regard portes-tu sur la scène metal internationale ?
H: Je pense qu'il n'y a pas de place pour les groupes émergeants de se faire connaître, parce que les gros groupes des années ‘80 sont toujours sous les feux de la rampe. J’aimerais bien un peu plus de renouvellement.

Qu’est-ce que tu écoutes comme musique ?
H: J’actualise mes playlists souvent. J’écoute Slayer, Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Iron Maiden, Maná, Tears for Fears, Dio, Michael Jackson, Alanis Morissette, etc

Quel est ton batteur préféré ?
Il y a beaucoup de batteurs que j’aime bien, spécialement Alex Gonzalez de Maná

Quelle est ta nourriture préférée ?
Bife à la Parmegiana de Fison Restaurant à Lençóis Paulista, ma ville natale. C'est une sorte de cordon bleu sans remplissage, le fromage fondu sur le dessus et beaucoup de sauce tomate. Ils le servent avec le meilleur riz et les meilleures frites.

Quel est ton top cinq de disques metal ?
H: Il est toujours en évolution. En ce moment même le nouvel album de Blind Guardian – At the edge of time, Ayreon - 01011001, Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss, Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time et Sonata Arctica - Silence.

Sur quelle scène aimerais-tu te produire ?
H: Je tiens vraiment à jouer au Wacken Open Air. Ce serait un rêve qui se réalise!

Voici une question rituelle de notre site : tu trouves la célèbre lampe magique et le génie peut exaucer 2 vœux, qu’est que tu demanderais ?
H: C'est une question difficile, mais puisque le génie est censé exaucer les rêves les plus fous, nous y voilà (lol): Je voudrais lui demander de faire revenir Michael Jackson, Ronnie James Dio et Freddie Mercury à la vie. Ils pourraient alors enregistrer une chanson de Soulspell où ils chantent ensemble. Et je compose une autre chanson spécialement pour Edu Falaschi et André Matos afin qu’ils puissent chanter ensemble et pas seulement en studio mais en live !

Hello and thank you for the time you dedicate us. The Labyrinth of Truth is available now and we are glad to talk with you about that.
H: Hello! Thank you for the interest and for giving us the opportunity to talk a little bit about our work.


How did you have the idea of this metal opera? What is the inspiration behind by The Labyrinth of Truths?
H: A friend of mine told me a true story about some strange visions he had. I found the story very interesting and added some fiction to it. I ended up with the story of the first act. Considering I love music and everything related to it, I started thinking of a metal opera when I realized that there were many talented musicians here in Brazil. I thought a metal opera would be a good opportunity for them to show their work and each vocalist could give life to each character of the story I created. The story of the
first album, "A Legacy of Honor", didn't end there and I always had in mind to continue it in a next album. So we came up with "The Labyrinth of Truths", which is a continuation of the story of the first act and also
brings some international participants.

Do you work first the general history of the opera or do you write each song before?
H: I write the story and then start thinking of the songs that would represent the happenings.

Do you write the lyrics first or music?
H: I first write the music, but it has to do with the story and the feelings involved in each passage. From the feeling of the characters I start thinking of the vocal line and then the lyrics, because I think the music
itself shows more feelings that the words we use to represent them.

What can you tell us about the concept that is described on The Labyrinth of Truths?
H: The Labyrinth of Truths is a fiction with many creatures. There are humans, beasts, demons, angels, dragons and many other characters with very particular personalities. What I wanted to elucidate here is that each being, regardless of his power, is able to change his own destiny as well as the others, that anyone can make a difference and that we are constantly struggling to make our decisions. Even a fifteen year old boy, a humble woodcutter or a powerful dragon from other dimensions are equally important in the general context of the universe.

What are your inspirations? (Books, artists, movies, video games?)
H: Well, the list is quite long and Ill probably forget may of them (lol), but let's give it a try:

 -  Books: The Arthur Books - Bernard Cornwell, The Lord of the Rings –
 J.R.R. Tolkien, Brida – Paulo Coelho, Shogun – James Clavell

How have you met and worked with all these artists? And was this easy?
H: Since I like music very much and have played in many bands in my life, I have contact with a lot of musicians and spend all my free time with them as well. While recording the first album, I met many musicians and those introduced me to others. By the time I'd finished it, I knew many people and
it was quite easy to get in touch with them. It was surprisingly easy to deal with all them as well. They are all very different, but very friendly and they all liked our work. Also we were speaking the same language, as we are all very passionate with regards to music.


What can you tell us about the recording session?
H: It took us a long time to record the second album. It took us more than one year to have it finished, since the first time we stepped in the studio. The atmosphere was always very funny, laid back, friendly and it demanded a lot from each of the musicians who would record their parts till we thought it was perfect. Although we had all the songs done before we started recording the album, we created a lot of things together there with the aid of Tito Falaschi, our producer.

Are you satisfied of the final result? And are there things you would change?
H: To be honest, I'm very satisfied with the result this time and there is absolutely nothing I'd change in this album. The mixing and mastering took us also a long time, but the final result is really good and the quality is excellent!

What is the artist with whom you worked best?
H: This is a hard question to answer. I sincerely liked working with all of them. Each one gave his/her best and contributed so that this album became what it is. Of course we spent more time with some of them because of personal affinities, so I became very close friends with Jefferson Albert and I really like dealing with Leandro Caçoilo. But, in the end, everybody was very professional and gave the work his/her personal touch.


What do you think of the contribution of girls (Manuela Saggioro and Daisa Munhoz)?
H: I must say I'm partial when the talk is about the girls (lol). I'm a big fan of theirs since the first time I saw them playing together. They have a band and they've been playing together for the last 6 years and I think, apart from the indubitable individual talent of each of them, they are absolutely perfect singing together, a real symbiosis, which I'm sure amazes everyone. I really like the strong voice of Daisa and the interpretation she gives to the parts she sings. Manuela does a duet with Edu Falaschi on the
last track of the second album, A Secret Compartment, that gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it, and I can tell you that I listen to it a lot (lol)!

Who is the artist that you wanted to have for this The Labyrinth of Truths but that you could not have?
H: There are many artists that are my idols and there are many of them I'd like to have on board. The thing is that I've found the perfect voice for each of my characters, so I don't think there is anyone missing on this album. But we still have act 3, 4, 5,... to come (lol). Tim Ripper, Blaze Bayley and Michael Vescera have already recorded their voices for the third album, which is planned to be released next year.

How are going on your gigs in Brazil? What are the musicians who can provide live dates?
H: We will start our live tour tomorrow (Oct 24th) and we are all looking forward to that. On this first concert we will have the participation of Edu Falaschi, Mário Pastore, Mário Linhares, Jefferson Albert, Daísa Munhoz and Manuela Saggioro. We have scheduled a tour and are taking this live concert
to many of the most important cities of Brazil. Each show will have its own special guests, so each singer will have the chance to be on the road with us.


Are you planning to have gigs elsewhere in Brazil? Maybe in Europe?
H: That is actually our goal. We plan to hold our concerts all over the world and we are preparing a very special show, very different to what people are used to see.

What do you think about the Brazilian metal scene? What are your favorite bands?
H: I think there are many good bands here waiting for their spot on the sun. I like many Brazilian bands like Angra, Pastore, Tierra Mistica, Wizards, Dark Avenger, Imago Mortis, Hibria.

What do you think about the international metal scene?
H: I think there is no room for new bands to arise, because the big 80's bands are still on the spotlight. I miss some young blood in the scene.

Which music do you listen?
H: It changes from time to time. I listen to Slayer, Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Iron Maiden, Maná, Tears for Fears, Dio, Michael Jackson, Alanis Morisette etc.


Who is your favorite drummer?
There are many drummers I like, but I specially Alex Gonzalez from Maná.

What is your favorite food?
Bife à Parmegiana from Fison Restaurant in Lençóis Paulista, my home town. It's a sort of condon bleu with no filling, melted cheese on top and lots of tomato sauce. They serve it with the best rice and French fries.


What are your top five metal discs?
H: It's always changing. At this very moment is the new one from Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time, Ayreon – 01011001, Slayer – Seasons in the Abyss, Iron Maiden – Somewhere in Time and Sonata Arctica – Silence.


Where would you like to produce you on stage?
H: I would really like to play on the Wacken Open Air. That'd be a dream coming true!


Here is a ritual question of our webzine: you find the famous magic lamp and genius can fulfill two wishes, what do you ask?
H: That is a hard question, but since the genius is supposed to fulfill the craziest dreams, here we go (lol): I'd ask him to bring Michael Jackson, Ronnie James Dio and Freddie Mercury back to life. They would then record a Soulspell song, where they would sing together. And I'd compose another song
specially for Edu Falaschi and André Matos to sing together and they would not only accept to do it, but would also sing it live holding one another :)
